Life of Georgia Building

Today I found this article posted in the AJC:
The Life of Georgia building, built in 1930, is owned by Emory Healthcare. They have plans to bulldoze the building to make way for a new healthcare center. The new center would be good for the area and for the city, however this building is a beautiful piece of Atlanta history. Most people don't notice the building that sits on the corner of Linden and West Peachtree St. I'll try and post a better picture in the near future. Apparently Emory already has a demo permit but doesnt plan to begin work for some time. The Atlanta Preservation Center is working to save the building and Emory hasn't been opposed to the idea, however they had looked into saving the building and deamed it to expensive. Read for yourself and check out the building when you can! There is also a petition to save the building however the link is not working (I'll post it when it starts working).

The Green Market

THE GREEN MARKET
Many of you may already know about the Green Market at Piedmont Park. For those of you who don't, here is a run down. The market is near the 14th St. entrance to Piedmont Park and is every from 9am to 1pm. For this year the market is open from May 3rd through December 13th. From what I remember last year it was only open until October, I could be wrong about this anyone know for sure? The market features local home grown food and crafts. When I went there were cheeses, wines, candy, jewelry, pies (I never actually saw the pies, I just kept hearing about them). Its a wonderful event and free to attend!

Resources

Every now and again I'll describe some of the links listed under "Resources" to the right. To start I'll introduce you to two very useful tools:

1. Fulton County Zoning Map
2. APD Crime Map

1. The zoning map tool is amazing! Ever wonder who owns that old house on the corner? Or that beautiful building downtown? You can find this info here. You can also find what the government estimates the property value is (much much lower than market value). You can see property lines and in most cases there are even pictures of the building! This tool is extremely helpful if not fun.

2. The crime map is another amazing Atlanta tool, however the results can be unsettling. APD diligently lists every crime and type on the map. Simply put in a date range and type of crime and it will show you all the locations that crime type has been reported during the time selected. I tried robberies and lets just say that there was a lot-o-stealing going on in our town last month. You can click on one of the little balloons and it will show you what the crime details are.

Hope you enjoy and find these resources helpful.

CITY HALL TOWER

The first post! Welcome to City of Embers. This is a blog that is all about Atlanta. Some future topics will include:

History
Secret Places
Facts
Urban Exploring
Great Places to Eat/Visit
Programs/Free Stuff
Concepts
New Projects/Development

The exact list will develop over the next few months. Now for the first post.
My favorite building in the whole word is the Atlanta City Hall Tower. This beautiful building sits at the corner of Central Avenue and Mitchell Street in downtown Atlanta. It was built in 1930 by architect Lloyd G Preacher. Atlanta actually had 3 other city halls previous to this one. Go to this city of Atlanta website to read more about its history. What most people don't know is that you can wander around in this building. Just go in and through security and take a look around, no need to state a reason for going in, just go on through. Obviously the building is very much active and you cannot go into restricted areas, but the architecture and details are stunning and beautifully preserved and there is much to see in the halls and open rooms. Here are some more pictures:
